It’s official. Birthday cake does taste better!
According to a collection of recent studies published in the Psychological Science world; performing rituals before eating can enhance the experience of eating, including enjoyment of the taste and flavor of your food.
They discovered to that it has to be you- yourself participating in the ‘ritualistic’ behavior or you don’t gain the advantage. Watching others doesn’t cut it.
And random, non-intentional actions don’t offer any impact.
Can you think of times when you’ve had a favorite food, and you- in actuality, ritualized the way you ate it? Slowly swirling and spooning a delicious soup, pudding or maybe ice cream; a delicious steak that you carefully carved with your knife into bite size morsels- chewing slowly and enjoying the tenderness of the meat; maybe a fresh strawberry or other favorite fruit that you bit and let almost melt away in your mouth…. You might remember to this day the delectable flavor you experienced at that moment.
Just think… if these studies have confirmed the importance of ritual for a daily pleasure such as eating – think how important ritual can be when honoring significant life events!
Think about intent and the personal honoring of noteworthy moments in your life: moving into a new home, retiring, having or adopting a child, getting married, getting divorced, a military homecoming or saying goodbye when a loved one passes away. These are all life transitions where ceremony, symbolism and ritual can bring greater meaning and fulfillment to your life journey.
